Omicron response....is it logical?

The world is closing again due to Omicron variant. Is this logical? Let's discuss a few points....
1. Covid-19 is a virus that mutates at a fast rate. Logically a vaccine that does not change should fail against a mutating virus.
2. Statistically, there should be many more variants in the USA as compared to South Africa...because case counts are larger. Therefore closing off SA seems dubious.
3. Many will eventually claim individual rights trump government rights. This concept will hinder all mitigation measures.
4. It is likely measures against Omicron will create a distraction for another variant to expand with minimal mitigation.
Overall, I don't see the pandemic leaving anytime soon. Mitigation measures have to be well thought out with long term solutions. Thus far the government has failed to contain the spread of the virus, and I do not expect they will be able to do much better. The current case count is ripe for creating new big waves....hence countermeasures have a low probability of protecting the entire population.
